General Info | Sevalaya, a registered charitable Trust functioning since 1988, is inspired by the life and teachings of Mahakavi Bharathiyar who declared that educating one poor child is the most meritorious charity; Swami Vivekananda who urged upon his followers to feed the poor rather than spending on rituals; and Mahatma Gandhi who believed that the Progress of India depended on that of its villages. With these 3 core Principles as the basis, Bharathi Unit of Sevalaya focuses on providing free education to the rural, underprivileged children; Vivekananda Unit takes care of destitute children and the seniors Gandhi Unit focuses on rural development activities. Vision : Sevalaya is “to serve the rural poor and transform them for an equitable, happy and fulfilled society with an improved quality of life”. Our Mission: Children: Providing high quality education, life skills and character building for rural children to prepare them for productive, healthy and happy lives The aged: Caring for the aged and ensuring their physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being. Rural Citizens: Providing capacity enhancement initiatives for the rural poor for self-sustaining livelihoods and lifestyles Objectives: To provide free quality education to the orphan, destitute, poor, underprivileged children and youth To handhold students for higher education and employment To provide shelter and care to the underprivileged children To provide shelter and care to the homeless senior citizens To provide shelter and care to destitute dry cows To promote organic farming practices To develop the neighbourhood rural community Our Major Activities are: i) Bharathi Unit: (Education) A) Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School providing free education to about 1950 rural Poor/Destitute children. B) The Mahakavi Bharathiyar Community College provides free vocational training in 5 streams to about 120 rural poor Youth/Batch. C) Swami Vivekananda Library with an impressive collection of over 20,000 books to promote literacy among the villagers Sevalaya through free education has brought so many families out of poverty and has made it possible for them to be self-reliant. To mention a few, thirty six (36) of our students has completed a bachelor degree in engineering, two hundred and thirty (230) have completed bachelor degree courses in science / commerce / arts and thirty one (31) have done a bachelor degree in agriculture. Further, three hundred and twelve (312) of them are employed in various private sector firms (including MNCs). Thirty students took up to teach and wanted to give back to the society what they learnt from Sevalaya. It is a matter of pride that none of our alumni are unemployed. ii) Vivekananda Unit: (Destitute children & senior citizens) A) Swami Vivekananda Boys Home and Mother Teresa Girls Home sheltering 187 orphan and destitute children. B) Integrated campus – housing 25 children and 25 senior citizens create an atmosphere of a big family and to seed the value of togetherness. C) Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Old Age Home sheltering 70 destitute, poor senior citizens. D) Mahatma Gandhi Medical Centre equipped with separate 12 bedded wards for men and women. iii) Gandhi Unit: (Rural Development) A) Kasturba Craft Centre provides free training in tailoring and craft to rural poor women. B) Promotes organic farming by practicing it in Sevalaya’s fields and organizing free training in organic farming for the local villagers. C) Vinobhaji Ghosala, shelters 45 dry cows to protect them from the slaughter house. It also shelters few cows yielding milk for consumption by residents. D) Organizes free medical camps for eye, dental and general check-up for the residents and villagers. Also conducts general camps on various issues. E) WETE (Women Empowerment Through Education) project. F) KottuMurasu (Beat the Drum), a Program which gives awareness to the villagers by the children on various issues. G) Mobile Library Project gives an opportunity for all the children and youths of 40 villages in and around Kasuva campus to read the books in their own places. |
